Waiting for the Apple iPhone 4 in Dubai, UAE

As we eagerly await the new Apple iPhone 4 in Dubai and UAE, we can't but anticipate how the cool phone will look and function. If anyone hears about the iPhone availability in the UAE, please post a comment in this blog including the price. We promise to post it as soon as we hear anything, so check back later!

My first opinion of the HTC Touch HD (high definition) was that it is an iPhone clone. With a big display like the iPhone I thought it was one of the many followers. But it was good to finally have a serious look at the Touch HD. Like top of the line HTC devices, the Touch HD boasts of decent processor and memory. It has fast 3G and the latest WM 6.1, the bigger screen is a welcome relief from tiny screens from earlier HTC models. The XDA II and the XDA Universal (imate Jasjar) had good screen sizes but that was like a decade ago! A cool 5 megapixel camera is like a icing on the cake.

T-Mobile and Google have announced the G1 phone which runs on the Android OS (developed by Google and the OHA) which is Open Source. It will be available in October 2008 through T-Mobile exclusively at first before being phased out to other parts of the world including UK, Europe and possibly the Middle East. The G1 is made by HTC but other manufacturers are working on new devices so we can expect some models to come to our part of the world.

History
I was just amazed from the time Google Android surfaced and had a lot of expectations on it. It was perceived as a mobile landscape changing operating system. I have been following it closely and just keeps exceeding my expectations. With the Android developer challenge Google offered $10 million in awards. Not surprisingly the applications in contest were very innovative and practical. With such programs, the phone can only get better.
I thought the applications will be good but the G1 will not be so smooth since it is the first device with Android but I was pleasantly surprised when the G1 surfaced. It was smooth, cool, with lots of features and innovations. For those of you who have been bored with Windows Mobile and Blackberry, this is a super duper option.

Vendor advantage
With the Android OS being free, the prices of the handsets are going to come down as manufacturers will not have to pay hefty OS fees. This benefit will be passed on to consumers. Manufacturers can now concentrate on improving the hardware design and usability while leaving the software to Google and the OHA. This will translate to more phone sales.

Consumer
Lower prices because of free OS, good responsive operating system, superior internet access and applications, wide availability of software from the Android market. With more people using the Internet on their phones, the data prices of Internet access will drop which will fuel sales further. This can only be good news! Who knows eventually the phone can be free since Google indends to make money from advertisements!

Sony Ericsson as a new 8 Megapixel trotting phone with Xenon Flash. While there are many 8 MP camera phones now, what attracted me to this one was the Xenon Flash and the scratch resistant screen (I always manage to get my screen full of scratches!). With AGPS, TV out and accelerometer it looks like the complete package. The excellent camera is specially handy while taking unplanned photographs like your new baby's smile. Auto focus will make grabbing pictures really good.

Everybody is jumping to the touch screen world, now Motorola is rumoured to be coming out with a Windows Mobile phone soon named Atila. It will be in the same category as the iPhone, Samsung Omnia and HTC.

Brief specs: GSM, Triband, HSDPA, around 400 MHz processor, 2.8 QVGA screen, Wifi, Windows Mobile 6.1

It will be interesting to see most major players of the mobile phone world making their foray into the touch screen world, with all big names Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and now Motorola all into it big time.

Original post blogged on Think Beyond

Want something enticing? The Samsung innov8 (pronounced as innovate) seems like the complete package. Most high end phones have one thing or the other missing. If they have good specs, they are bad in looks. If they have good processor and sleek design then they usually have low memory. Not the Samsung innov8, it has good looks, 8 megapixel camera!!, GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, touchscreen. In fact it is very much like the Omnia specs wise, except that Omnia runs on Windows Mobile platform and is better in looks. But innov8 got a sliding keypad, but it seems the Omnia will be here first. Looks like Samsung is taking out killer devices now.

It should be available in 2 flavours 8 GB and 16 GB same as the Omnia.

Did someone wake up the sleeping giant? Finally we see Nokia coming out with a touch screen phone. Are we going to see a keen contest to the Apple iPhone? Apple iPhone has been a wonder with no other touch screen devices coming close to it in terms of commercial success. In fact before the iPhone, touch screens were used by top executives and business people or the technically affiliated. With the iPhone millions of people are now using touch screen and swearing by the easy way of doing things.

In Nokia 5800 Xpress Media, Nokia introduces a very PDA specification with 3.2 megapixel camera, Wifi, GPS and touch screen. It takes on the iPhone headon and the other touch screen models like successful HTC Touch or Sony Ericsson P1.

The 5800 Tube is expected to come by end of 2008, this is one touch screen war we are anxious to watch!
